A/V Worker Organizing

Where do non-writers fit in at FSP-NWU?

Members of the National Writers Union (NWU) organize through the Freelance Solidarity Project (FSP) to improve working conditions for digital media freelancers across the industry. But we aren’t all writers, or exclusively writers; many of us have worked in multiple media over the course of our careers. FSP’s A/V Subcommittee includes podcast producers, writers, editors, hosts, researchers, sound designers, photographers, illustrators, graphic designers, content marketers, communications pros, and more.

Are you a freelancer interested in building power with fellow workers across media? Sign up below to talk to an organizer, attend an info session, or get added to FSP’s public mailing list. Or, if you like what you hear and you’re ready to dive in, join NWU and start organizing with FSP today.

Snapshot: organizing audio workers

How are our audio worker members organizing to win better conditions throughout the industry?

We practice solidarity with fellow workers.

In the wake of mass layoffs at Spotify, we shared a New-to-Freelancing Resources Guide to support workers navigating next steps. In summer 2023, we collaborated with the WGA’s Audio Alliance on a Strike Solidarity Guide for Nonfiction Podcasters.

We create practical resources to improve freelance audio working conditions.

We push for rate transparency, advise on fair practices, and develop audio freelancer-friendly contract language.

We explore emerging and alternative media worker-friendly models.

We are developing resources to support audio workers and production companies interested in converting to worker-owned co-ops.

We work to improve law and policy.

We’ve organized to fight for freelancer rights through legislation such as Freelance Isn’t Free and testified to the federal government about Generative AI and copyright in order to shape policy and pro-worker industry practices.
