We are freelance digital media workers organizing to improve our working conditions.

The Freelance Solidarity Project is organized by the Digital Media Division of the National Writers Union.

Why organize?

As the media industry becomes increasingly unstable, we must build a community to protect each other, fight isolation and alienation, and experience the gains of collective bargaining. Together, we can build a more equitable, sustainable, and just industry.

Principles for Working With Freelancers

These baseline principles for how freelance media workers deserve to be treated are a resource for both publications and freelancers.

Freelance Isn’t Free

It’s illegal for employers to withhold wages from full-time employees, and freelancers deserve the explicit protection of the law too. Enter Freelance Isn’t Free, which aims to enshrine some basic rights for freelancers.

Rate Sharing

Our goal is to create a comprehensive database of rates for digital media freelancers across the industry.

Solidarity with Staff Unions

As freelancers, we stand in firm solidarity with full-time media staffers who strive to unionize and improve conditions in their workplaces.
